It is well written and covers in lively style the characters of British governors, the economics of land purchase, the difficulties of free and convict settlers, the impact of the 1850's gold rush, and the extreme challenges of exploring the interior Australian deserts. I had never really separated Australian and New Zealand history. Since we are going to New Zealand I wanted to know more about New Zealand. It illuminated the Maori/European conflicts and cooperation.
written in late 1800's... so style is a bit stilted, however, facts presented were not dry and covered the ground. a fair window into Aussie history...and the price was right... -)
I picked the book up on my to read during a cruise around Australia. I teach history in the USA and wanted to know more about how Australia began. Definitely not a light read, but full of details if that's your thing.
ok read not too exciting ,Hard to read the old English words
Ok, history can be fun or not - but this book has highlights of different years. I like it. I am looking forward to the other book by the same author too. It is nice to focus in on one country and see how it developed, etc. Glad I got the book.
I was part way through reading this when I realized it was written in 1894, so the history was written from the prospective of Australia over 100 years ago. Excellent and very thorough history of the discovery and discovery and discovery again by several voyagers of Australia and then the settlement of the continent by various European nations. Very detailed and written as a history, not for pure entertainment value. Have always had interest in the settlement of Australia so I found it a very interesting read.
Very much enjoyed it- in short order made an outline map of Australia for an overlay, and used different colors for the various administrations as they engaged more of the country.
